A Beat to Rest is an 11-minute short film about Ted, an elderly jazz drummer late into his career, who is forced to confront the reality that aging is diminishing his physical abilities. After a bandmate suggests he retire, Ted grapples with accepting the decline of his performance and the looming end of his professional life. The film explores the profound identity crisis that follows, as Ted has associated his entire sense of self with his drumming. Through long, contemplative takes, the narrative traces his emotional struggle to come to terms with losing the passion and craft that defined him, ultimately meditating on aging, mortality, and the heartbreak of an artist losing the ability to do what they love.
