A Family Affair

Zara, a 24-year-old personal assistant to self-absorbed, high-maintenance movie star Chris Cole, grows increasingly frustrated with her underappreciated role. After Chris dismisses her script advice and changes his gate code while she is mid-conversation with a writer, she quits. Chris later shows up at Zara's home intending to offer her an associate producer position, but instead encounters her widowed mother, Brooke. The two connect and eventually become romantically involved. When Zara discovers them together, Chris promises the relationship will not continue, and Zara agrees to return to work. At an industry gala, Zara learns that Chris has hired Brooke as his new writer, deepening the entanglement. She confronts them both, but Brooke dismisses her daughter's concerns. During a Christmas visit to Brooke's mother-in-law Leila's house, Zara overhears Brooke open up about difficulties in her marriage to her late husband. Zara then spots a pair of diamond earrings in Chris's bag and, knowing his pattern of gifting identical earrings to women just before ending relationships, warns Brooke that a breakup is coming. Brooke ends things with Chris as a result. Later, Chris confides in Zara and explains that he had not been planning to leave Brooke—the earrings were simply forgotten in his bag. Realizing she was wrong, Zara apologizes and engineers a chance encounter at a supermarket that reconciles the couple. A year later, Chris and Brooke are still together, and Zara has been promoted to producer.
