Begotten (1991) is a near-wordless, black-and-white experimental film presenting a visceral retelling of a primordial creation myth. The film opens with a robed, masked figure identified as God sitting in a dilapidated shack and slowly disemboweling himself with a straight razor until he dies. A woman — representing Mother Earth or the Holy Spirit — emerges from his remains, stimulates the corpse to arousal, and uses his semen to impregnate herself. She then ventures out into a bleak, barren wasteland. After wandering through the desolate landscape, she gives birth to a fully grown but malformed man — Son of Earth, or Flesh on Bone — who writhes and convulses helplessly on the ground. A tribe of faceless, robed nomads discovers the pair. They seize the son and subject him to prolonged brutal ordeals: stabbing him into a fire pit and beating his head with clubs. The nomads then fatally beat the mother and sexually violate her corpse while her injured son lies nearby. Two robed figures eventually collect the broken remains of both mother and son, transporting them to a remote gorge. There they methodically dismember the bodies, grind the bones, and bury the fragments in the earth. In the film's closing imagery, flowers and crops begin to grow from the burial sites, suggesting that the violent deaths have seeded new life — and that the cycle of creation, suffering, destruction, and renewal is beginning again.
