In the summer of 1983, seventeen-year-old Elio Perlman lives with his parents at their villa in rural Northern Italy. His father, a professor of Greco-Roman archaeology, invites Oliver, a twenty-four-year-old American graduate student, to stay with the family for the season and assist with academic work.
