Careful

Set in the fictional alpine village of Tolzbad, where avalanches can be triggered by any loud noise or excessive emotional outburst, the inhabitants are forced to suppress all strong feeling and speak only in whispers. Brothers Johann and Grigorss are training to become butlers. Their household is quietly tormented: a third brother, Franz, lives exiled in the attic after warnings from their dead father's ghost about impending family doom, while their widowed mother Zenaida nurses a secret passion for the reclusive local nobleman Count Knotkers. Johann becomes incestuously obsessed with his mother — he spies on her bathing and assaults her while she sleeps. Overcome with shame, he self-mutilates and throws himself off the mountain to his death. Grigorss, meanwhile, is betrothed to Klara, who herself harbors incestuous desire for her own father. When Zenaida confesses her long-standing love for Count Knotkers, Grigorss challenges the Count to a duel. Klara encourages him to go through with it despite his mother's pleas. Grigorss kills Count Knotkers in the duel. On learning this, Zenaida hangs herself. Klara then manipulates Grigorss into engineering her father's death by avalanche, before throwing herself off a sleigh to die alongside him. Left utterly alone, Grigorss retreats to a mountain cave, where a single falling tear triggers an avalanche that entombs and freezes him to death as he hallucinates a reunion with his dead parents. Franz and his companion Sigleinde search the mountains for their family, unaware that every member is dead.
