Hi, Mom!

Jon Rubin (Robert De Niro), a Vietnam veteran with aspirations of becoming a filmmaker, returns to New York City and rents a shabby apartment in Greenwich Village. He mounts a camera in his window and begins voyeuristically filming the residents of the building across the street, particularly a young woman named Judy Bishop (Jennifer Salt). He connects with Joe Banner (Allen Garfield), a sleazy producer willing to finance an adult film if Jon can deliver usable footage of his unsuspecting neighbors. The scheme collapses when equipment malfunction ruins the footage and Banner withdraws his offer. Jon then falls in with a radical Black Power experimental theater troupe that stages a confrontational performance piece called 'Be Black, Baby!' During the production, white audience members are forced to eat soul food and have shoe polish applied to their faces, while Black actors wearing whiteface costumes verbally and physically terrorize them — culminating in audience members being assaulted in an elevator. Jon participates by dressing as an NYPD officer and 'arresting' the white patrons under false pretenses, framing them as Black individuals. In a darkly satirical coda, the traumatized white audience members subsequently appear on public television praising the experience as enlightening. Jon eventually settles into conventional domesticity by marrying Judy and taking a job as an insurance salesman — then plants a bomb in the residential building where they live, blowing it up. He watches the destruction from the street and calmly gives an interview to a television news reporter about the devastation.
