Julian Po

Julian Po (Christian Slater) is a quiet, withdrawn bookkeeper who arrives in a small, insular town with the sole intention of killing himself. He takes a room in a local boarding house and keeps entirely to himself, which quickly raises the suspicions of the nosy townspeople. Scrutinized at every turn, he is eventually confronted by a delegation led by the mayor and the sheriff, who accuse him of being a drug pusher or a murderer. Cornered and frustrated, Po blurts out the truth: he has come to town to commit suicide. Rather than alarm them, this confession transforms Po into a local celebrity. The townspeople, for whom this is the most exciting event in recent memory, shower him with free goods and services and treat him with a curious mix of sympathy and fascination. Among them is Sarah (Robin Tunney), a beautiful and intense young woman who develops a deep, almost fated bond with Julian. Her love gives him a reason to reconsider his plans. The story turns dark when Sarah, in a tragic act meant as a declaration of her love, takes her own life. The townspeople are outraged — they had come to invest emotionally in Julian's death, and Sarah's suicide feels like a theft of the spectacle they were anticipating. Their sympathy curdled into cruelty, the community begins pressuring Julian to follow through on his original intention. Residents actively try to help him die, including a barber who offers a swift end with a straight razor. The film closes with Julian being escorted out of town, heading toward the sea — the destination he had always named — implying that he ultimately fulfills his original purpose.
