Pure Scum follows Ayden, a book-smart prodigy turned drug dealer, and Jesse, a charismatic rebel, two recently graduated ex-private schoolboys in Melbourne, Australia. The night begins with a drug-fueled car crash in the inner suburbs — a hit-and-run incident that injures a mother and daughter — after which the pair flee the scene and escape into the Melbourne CBD rather than face the consequences. As police slowly close in, Ayden and Jesse attempt to bury their guilt and panic in the hedonistic embrace of alcohol and drugs, plunging into Melbourne's underground nightlife. Their relationship is revealed to be deeply toxic: Jesse maintains a facade of cool detachment while Ayden depends on him, and neither genuinely cares for the other — each exploiting the other for narcissistic ends while both dodge all accountability. The film traces this single night as a character study of the liminal space between adolescence and adulthood, examining entitlement and the refusal to reckon with consequences. A series of increasingly reckless and dangerous decisions causes the night to escalate from raw debauchery into rapidly escalating violence, ultimately spiralling into a confrontational and deliberately unpleasant conclusion. Director Gideon Aroni frames the experience as a provocation designed to force the viewer to sit inside a world of unchecked privilege as it unravels.
