This one-hour BBC/PBS America documentary is presented by marine archaeologist Dr. Jon Henderson, who investigates the Norse presence in Scotland by visiting archaeological sites across Scotland and Norway. The film centres on the Battle of Largs (2 October 1263), when Norwegian King Haakon IV sailed a fleet of roughly 120 longships to reassert control over the Norse-held Hebrides, which Scottish forces had been raiding. A violent storm on the night of 1 October drove several Norwegian vessels aground near Largs on the Ayrshire coast. The following morning, as Norse crews attempted to salvage ships and cargo, approximately 1,000 Norwegian men were attacked by Scottish forces. The outcome was inconclusive, but the engagement effectively ended Norse ambitions in Scotland: Haakon withdrew to Orkney and died there in December 1263, and by 1266 the Treaty of Perth formally transferred the Hebrides and Isle of Man to Scottish sovereignty. Henderson contextualises the battle within the longer arc of Scandinavian settlement in Scotland, exploring why the Norse first arrived, how they established raiding and trading bases, and how they gradually assimilated into local communities rather than disappearing entirely. A key site visited is Rubh' an Dunain on the Isle of Skye, where a man-made canal and a sheltered loch suggest use as a Viking naval base; 12th-century boat timbers recovered from the loch support the interpretation. The film argues that although Viking political power retreated after Largs, Norse cultural influence persisted and shaped the identity of the emerging Scottish nation.
