Where Sweet Dreams Die follows Luca Brunello, an Italian-American restaurant owner whose life is collapsing on two fronts: his family business is failing and his wife is battling cancer. As his circumstances deteriorate, Luca grows consumed by resentment and desperation, his worldview darkening into paranoia and rage. He becomes obsessively fixated on Ashton Nassar, a Syrian refugee working as a cab driver who is energetically pursuing his own version of the American Dream. The contrast between Ashton's forward momentum and Luca's sense of being left behind fuels Luca's bitterness. He begins to blame outsiders — immigrants, the government — for the collapse of the life he built, adopting a grievance-driven worldview captured in lines like 'This was the land of opportunity. Now it's a place where good men get left behind. While strangers build their dreams on the ashes of ours.' Luca's fixation on Ashton becomes increasingly volatile, setting the two men on a dangerous collision course on the streets of a divided city.
