Your Mother and I

"Your Mother and I" is a short film (approx. 10 minutes) directed by Anna Maguire, adapted from a short story by Dave Eggers. The film takes place almost entirely in a kitchen, where Johnna and her father are making nachos together. When Johnna picks up a photograph of her parents, her father launches into extended, oddly detailed monologues recounting the many ways he and her mother "changed the world" through their humanitarian exploits. He interrupts these grandiose, self-aggrandizing tales periodically to deliver cooking instructions before resuming. Johnna remains largely silent throughout, her expressions and body language conveying frustration and emotional distance. The film explores the unbridgeable gap between a verbose, self-mythologizing father—who may use storytelling to mask his own vulnerability—and a withdrawn, introverted daughter who cannot connect with his theatrics. The two circle each other in emotional orbit without truly meeting. The film ends ambiguously; the veracity of the father's stories (including whether they "actually free the llamas") is never confirmed, leaving the viewer uncertain whether his tales are genuine accomplishments, exaggerations, or outright fabrications. The central tension is intergenerational: the small, mundane kitchen scene belies the larger rift between parent and child.
