Tropes in this movie
You Can't Trust Anyone
highBrooke, a longtime trusted friend, secretly orchestrates the entire scheme using planted impostors (Emma/Vicki and Connor/Clay) with fake identities. Maria's growing suspicion is validated when she uncovers the conspiracy. The true enemy was hiding in plain sight as a close friend, and every new ally (the tenant couple) turns out to be part of the deception.
About this trope: Trusted allies, institutions, or authority figures are secretly working against the protagonist. Paranoia is justified because betrayal is real and pervasive.
Full plot (spoilers)
Newlyweds Maria and Joe purchase a farmhouse to pursue rural life but have no farming experience. They recruit a tenant couple, Vicki and Clay, through social media to help rehabilitate the property. The two couples initially get along well, but Maria grows suspicious when Vicki becomes overly flirtatious with Joe. Unbeknownst to everyone, Brooke — a longtime friend of Maria and Joe — is secretly orchestrating events. Brooke harbors deep bitterness over Joe leaving her to marry Maria. She previously met Vicki, whose real name is Emma Spears, an artist, while Emma was drawing Brooke's portrait. Brooke vented about Joe and Maria and enlisted Emma to move into the house with her associate Connor (posing as Clay) to flirt with Joe and drive a wedge between the couple. However, Emma came to see that Maria was genuinely good for Joe and decided to abandon Brooke's scheme. Enraged, Brooke grabbed Emma and threw her into the lake, killing her. Vicki/Emma is found floating face down at the edge of the lake, and police — led by Detective Reed — open a homicide investigation. Clay/Connor mysteriously vanishes, and all his belongings disappear from the bedroom. Maria receives a flash drive containing photos of Vicki with Joe, intensifying her marital suspicion. The investigation reveals Vicki's true identity as Emma Spears, an artist who owed back rent, and a sketch signed 'E.S.' is found depicting Clay, whose real name is Connor. Connor is linked to a bank robbery, and a missing key relates to stolen cash. Joe is subsequently kidnapped and held captive by a figure in a black hoodie. Maria uncovers the criminals' true identities and lures Connor back to the farm. In the climax, Brooke is revealed as the mastermind behind everything. Maria fights Brooke and kicks her down a short flight of stairs. Brooke disappears momentarily, kills the lights, and holds the couple at gunpoint. Joe tries to talk her down, but Brooke shoots him in the right leg. Maria pleads with Brooke not to kill them. Brooke ultimately lowers her gun and is arrested.
