You Can't Trust Anyone
highSara Havel, presented as the sole surviving witness and the documentary crew's trusted source, is ultimately revealed as a possessed cultist who lures Graves and her team into the hotel to be killed. The documentary framing amplifies the betrayal: Sara's cooperative account looked credible until discovered inconsistencies (no hotel check-in record, room 2C absent from building layout) validated the crew's growing suspicion. The true enemy was hiding in plain sight as the protagonist's primary ally, paranoia is explicitly validated by the plot, and the investigators only discover the manipulation as they are being attacked.
About this trope: Trusted allies, institutions, or authority figures are secretly working against the protagonist. Paranoia is justified because betrayal is real and pervasive.

Hell House LLC is a found-footage horror film set around a tragedy that occurred on October 8, 2009, at a Halloween haunted house attraction in the fictional town of Abaddon, New York, in which 15 people — both tour-goers and staff — died under unexplained circumstances. The story is framed as a documentary assembled five years later by an investigative team led by Diane Graves, who tracks down Sara Havel, the sole surviving staff member, who provides behind-the-scenes footage the crew shot in the weeks leading up to opening night.
The footage shows the Hell House LLC crew arriving at the dilapidated Hotel Abaddon to convert it into their haunted attraction. The hotel has a dark history: it was built by Andrew Tully, an alleged cultist who chose the location because the town name 'Abaddon' refers to a demon said to guard the gateway to hell. In 1989, a young mother and daughter disappeared at the hotel; Tully was cleared of involvement but later hanged himself there. The crew's CEO, Alex, presses on with preparation despite the ominous history, planning a basement scene featuring an actress chained up and about to be sacrificed to a cult.
As the crew sets up, supernatural disturbances begin: a clown mannequin is repeatedly found in different positions, shadowy figures appear in the footage, and crew members suffer possession-like episodes. Staff member Paul disappears after what appears to be a spiritual assault and is later discovered in a dissociative fugue state. Despite the escalating hauntings and the crew's growing terror, Alex refuses to cancel the opening.
On opening night the attraction descends into chaos. Melissa is killed by what appears to be a ghost cultist, triggering a panicked stampede among the tour-goers. Tony dies attempting to intervene. Mack and Sara flee to the attic, where they find Alex has hanged himself — mirroring Tully's death. Shadowy cultist figures then kill Mack as Sara barely escapes.
In the present-day documentary framing, Graves and her crew discover inconsistencies that deepen the mystery: Sara apparently never checked into the hotel according to records, and room 2C — prominently featured in the footage — does not appear to exist in the building's layout. Undeterred, the documentary crew breaks into the long-abandoned Hotel Abaddon to investigate. Inside, they encounter a possessed Sara alongside other shadow cultists, who attack and presumably kill them.
