Jack Wolfe is a shady, wealthy entrepreneur with a criminal history who is cornered by federal authorities facing indictment. To escape his predicament, he devises an elaborate scheme: fake his own death, collect a $30 million life insurance payout, and simultaneously frame Chad, his wife Nora's younger lover, for his staged murder. Nora, who holds 51% of their joint company, is supposed to play the grieving widow and cooperate with the plan. However, Jack has uncovered through private investigators that Nora has been conducting multiple affairs—not only with Chad but also with a detective named Dani—and he uses this knowledge to blackmail her into compliance. Unknown to Jack, Nora has her own agenda: kill him for real rather than merely staging his death, frame Chad anyway, and claim the entire fortune for herself. The story unfolds partly on a tropical island in the present day and partly through flashbacks that fill in the backstory of their mutual deception. As both spouses race to outmanoeuvre each other, Chad and detective Bianca find themselves increasingly caught in the Wolfes' overlapping schemes. The film builds to a farcical climax in its final fifteen minutes, delivering a cascade of absurd reveals that expose the full, duplicitous scope of both Jack's and Nora's plans and settle the question of who ultimately outwits whom.
