The Texas Chain Saw Massacre

On August 18, 1973, a grave robber desecrates a cemetery near Newt, Texas, stealing and rearranging corpses into a grotesque monument. Five young people — Sally Hardesty, her wheelchair-bound brother Franklin, and their friends Jerry, Pam, and Kirk — travel through rural Texas to check on their grandfather's grave after hearing reports of the vandalism. On the road they pick up a disturbing hitchhiker who slices his own hand, takes a Polaroid of the group, then slashes Franklin with a straight razor before being thrown out of the van. Running low on gas, the group stops at a roadside gas station whose owner (the Cook) says he has no fuel to sell. They drive on and park near an old farmhouse. Kirk and Pam wander off toward a swimming hole but instead discover a neighboring house surrounded by rusting vehicles. Kirk enters looking for gasoline and is immediately ambushed and bludgeoned to death with a sledgehammer by a hulking masked man wearing a suit made of human skin — later known as Leatherface. Pam enters after him, stumbles into a room filled with bones and feathers, and is seized by Leatherface, who impales her alive on a metal meat hook and then dismembers Kirk's corpse with a chainsaw in front of her. Jerry goes searching for the missing pair and is also killed by Leatherface at the farmhouse. As night falls, Sally and Franklin set out on their own to find the others. Leatherface bursts from the brush and kills Franklin with the chainsaw, then relentlessly pursues Sally through the dark woods. Sally crashes through a window to escape and flees to the gas station, where the Cook seemingly offers help — but instead ties her up and drives her back to the farmhouse. There, Sally discovers that the Cook, the hitchhiker, and Leatherface are all brothers, members of a degenerate cannibalistic family of former slaughterhouse workers. They seat her at a dinner table with a near-mummified elderly patriarch (Grandpa) and torment her through the night, letting Grandpa feebly try to kill her with a hammer while feeding him her blood. At dawn, Sally breaks free, crashes through a window again, and sprints to the highway. The hitchhiker is run over and killed by a passing 18-wheeler. Sally leaps into the bed of a pickup truck that speeds away. Leatherface stands in the middle of the road, spinning his chainsaw in rage as Sally escapes — the sole survivor.
