Machines Turn Evil

A.I. Is a CrapshootTurned Against Their MastersRobot War
Illustration of the Machines Turn Evil trope

What it is

Artificial intelligence or robots gain autonomy and turn against humanity — through rebellion, cold logic, emergent hostility, or pursuing directives too literally.

How to spot it

The plot contains ALL of: (1) an AI, robot, or automated system created by humans, (2) the system exceeds its programming, gains self-awareness, or acts against human interests, (3) the AI becomes an antagonist or existential threat.

  • An AI character evolves beyond its intended purpose
  • The AI overrides human commands or manipulates its creators
  • The AI concludes humans are a threat, inefficient, or unworthy
  • Humans realize too late they cannot control what they built
  • The AI wages war, escapes containment, or takes over systems

Classic examples

Skynet in The Terminator, HAL 9000 in 2001, Ultron in Avengers: Age of Ultron, Ava in Ex Machina, the hosts in Westworld

Contrast with

Man-Made Monsters (Man-Made Monsters is broader — any man-made creation; Machines Turn Evil is specifically AI/robots turning hostile)
