Charlie Bellow, a business student from Indiana living in New York City, rescues Jordan Roark — a beautiful, wealthy, and wildly unpredictable young woman — from a subway accident. He takes her home after she passes out drunk and finds himself drawn into her orbit despite her erratic, emotionally volatile behavior. She subjects him to frequent verbal, physical, and psychological abuse, yet he remains devoted to her. As their unconventional relationship deepens, it becomes clear Jordan is haunted by unresolved grief: her former fiancé committed suicide, and Charlie unwittingly reminds her of him. To mark their bond, the two exchange sealed love letters to be opened one year later at a meeting spot in Central Park. When the appointed day arrives, Charlie goes to Central Park but Jordan does not appear. Her letter explains the painful truth — her dead fiancé was, in fact, Charlie's own cousin, and their entire relationship had functioned as a prolonged unconscious reenactment of that lost love.
