Narrative tropes

Revenge Destroys You

medium

Terry's entire plot is driven by vengeance against society and the pornography industry. The pursuit visibly degrades him: he escalates from a single opportunistic murder to systematic kidnapping, torture, dismemberment, and ocular drilling — satisfying signal 1 (avenger becomes increasingly brutal and morally compromised). The closing voiceover confirming arrest and imprisonment frames the revenge quest as self-destructive rather than triumphant — satisfying signal 2 (revenge brings no peace, only consequence). The film-within-a-film structure positions the violence as a meditation on brutality rather than a cathartic payoff, reinforcing the 'revenge destroys you' framing over 'revenge is sweet.'

About this trope: Pursuing vengeance — even when justified — is ultimately self-destructive, hollow, or morally degrading. The avenger is consumed by their quest.

Full plot (spoilers)

Terry Hawkins, a young ex-convict and amateur filmmaker, is released from prison after a drug charge and harbors a deep resentment toward society. Convinced that audiences crave extreme content, he sets out to make snuff films as a form of vengeance against the world — particularly the pornography industry he despises. He secures financing from a jaded gay film executive named Steve Randall under false pretenses, assembling a small, compliant crew of accomplices to help him. The group lures a blind transient to an abandoned building (shot in an unused university campus structure) and murders him on camera as their first production. Terry then seduces Nancy Palmer, a woman connected to the pornography industry, and confronts her with footage of the killing. Growing more brazen, Terry kidnaps Steve Randall, Nancy, and an actress named Suzie Knowles. The crew then systematically murders each captive on film: Suzie is branded, Jim Palmer is beaten to death, and Nancy is subjected to prolonged torture and dismemberment — kept conscious with smelling salts throughout. In the climax, Terry forces Steve Randall through a series of humiliating acts before drilling through his eye socket, killing him. The film closes with a voiceover stating that Terry, Bill, Ken, Patricia, and Kathy were apprehended and are serving time in a state penitentiary. The narrative operates as a film-within-a-film, framing its extreme violence as a meditation on the aestheticization of brutality and revenge against the exploitation industry.
