Violence Gets Results

medium

The central threat (Adrian hunting Kim) is resolved exclusively through physical violence: the family dog attacks Adrian, knocking him into the flames where he dies. Non-violent approaches all fail — Kim flees but leaves her purse behind, giving Adrian her address; the police are alerted by Stephen but cannot stop Adrian before he reaches the house. The climax is a violent confrontation, the antagonist is killed physically, and the story frames his death as the only escape without questioning whether violence was appropriate.

About this trope: The central conflict is ultimately resolved through physical force rather than negotiation, diplomacy, or systemic change. Talking fails; fighting works.

Full plot (spoilers)

Lisa Harris, a high school student more interested in her boyfriend than her studies, joins her classmate Kim Fielding and Kim's younger sister Julia for an evening at Kim's house while Kim's parents are away. Bored waiting for Lisa's boyfriend to arrive, the three girls begin making prank phone calls, calling random numbers and whispering the taunt "I saw what you did, and I know who you are" before hanging up. One of these calls reaches Adrian Lancer, a mentally unstable man who has just murdered his girlfriend Robyn Griffin after she refused his marriage proposal. Adrian, still in the process of burying Robyn's body, takes the call as a genuine threat from a witness and becomes convinced someone saw him commit the crime. Kim, misreading Adrian's tense reaction as flirtatious interest, calls him back and agrees to meet him. When Kim visits Adrian's house, she quickly senses something is badly wrong and flees, but accidentally leaves her purse behind, giving Adrian a link to her identity and address. Meanwhile, Adrian's brother Stephen discovers evidence of Robyn's murder and contacts the police. Adrian evades capture and tracks Kim back to her home. He sets the house on fire and confronts Kim inside. The family dog attacks Adrian, knocking him into the flames, and he dies from his burns as Kim and Lisa escape with help from neighbors. In the film's final twist, Kim receives a phone call from Stephen, who declares, "Kim, I know who you are. You killed my brother," leaving her terrified as the credits roll.
