Tyler misses their intended exit and they find themselves on an unfamiliar two-lane road. Almost immediately, tens of desperate, ragged people emerge from the surrounding forest and claw at their Jeep Cherokee, forcing the group to keep driving. They soon realize several impossible facts: the fuel gauge never moves, they feel no hunger or fatigue, and the road stretches on without end. The group theorizes they have stumbled into a form of Purgatory or been caught by some cosmic curse. When they encounter an abandoned vehicle whose odometer has rolled over past one million miles, the scale of their entrapment becomes clear. Unable to cope, Tyler eventually abandons the group and disappears, leaving James, Day, and Fisher to continue alone. The three survivors adapt, establishing routines for rest stops and scavenging items from other abandoned cars to preserve their sanity.
