Nick Eliot, a 28-year-old freelance writer, rents a guest cottage on the property of Cliff and Liv Forrester. Their precocious 14-year-old daughter, Adrian, quickly develops an intense romantic obsession with him. Her initial overtures are seemingly innocent — she invites Nick to a party where she performs on piano — but soon escalate: she kisses him during a car ride, makes seductive advances, and makes clear she wants a real relationship. Nick recognizes the danger and tries to extricate himself by pursuing a romance with his coworker Amy. Spurned, Adrian's fixation turns vindictive. She vandalizes Nick's newly restored car with graffiti and erases the files from his work computer. She also sabotages a riding saddle belonging to her friend Cheyenne, who is getting too close to Nick. Most violently, she locks Amy in a darkroom and releases a wasp nest inside, causing severe stings that hospitalize Amy. When Nick confronts her, Adrian retaliates by fabricating a sexual-assault accusation against him, producing false evidence. The accusation threatens to destroy Nick's life.
