Other Mommy
Narrative tropes
You Can't Trust Anyone
highThe supernatural entity impersonates Ursula (trusted mother figure), hiding in plain sight inside the family home. The central dramatic tension is the family's inability to determine which of the two identical women is real — paranoia is not only justified but literally the plot. Bela is actively manipulated into trusting the false mother, and the true threat operates undetected within the inner circle of trust.
About this trope: Trusted allies, institutions, or authority figures are secretly working against the protagonist. Paranoia is justified because betrayal is real and pervasive.
Cultural messages
Family Is Everything
mediumFamily bonds are the story's structural core: marital strain sets the stage, the entity specifically targets and exploits the mother-daughter relationship (Bela's need for 'Other Mommy'), and Ursula's entire arc is defined by fighting to reclaim her daughter. The threat is designed to sever the family by replacing its maternal anchor, making protection and reunion the operative stakes.
About this message: Family bonds — biological or found — are ultimately what saves the day, provides meaning, and matters most. Characters who stray from family suffer; those who return are rewarded.

Full plot (spoilers)
Other Mommy follows Bela, an eight-year-old girl living in a household strained by her parents' marital problems. One night a sinister supernatural entity emerges from her closet — an entity that looks and sounds exactly like her mother, Ursula. Bela begins calling this presence 'Other Mommy.' Rather than retreating in fear, Bela is drawn into a relationship with the creature, which gradually pulls her into an increasingly dark and terrifying world. Ursula (played by Jessica Chastain in a dual role) must fight to protect her daughter while the family struggles to determine which of the two near-identical women is the real mother. The entity grows bolder, haunting the home and threatening the entire family. The film is adapted from Josh Malerman's 2024 Bram Stoker Award–nominated novel Incidents Around the House. Full third-act and ending details are not yet publicly documented, as the film opened on or around October 7–9, 2026.
