Narrative tropes
Revenge Is Sweet
highCamille's entire premise is revenge: she assumed a false identity specifically to investigate and avenge Kerrie's murder. Official justice is absent (the headmistress dismisses deaths as runaways). Camille kills both killers and the story frames her departure—saying goodbye to Kerrie's ghost and walking off campus—as cathartic vindication with zero consequences for her violence.
About this trope: Vengeance is portrayed as justified, satisfying, and morally righteous. The audience is invited to cheer as the protagonist destroys those who wronged them.
You Can't Trust Anyone
highBetrayal is layered and pervasive: Bethany, a group member, is secretly the primary killer; Trevor, the trusted school handyman, murdered Alicia Kane and fabricated the ghost legend. The fake séance frames Camille for Rosalind's murder, validating paranoia. Every apparent ally or authority is hiding a secret, and the true enemies were embedded among the protagonist's immediate circle the entire time.
About this trope: Trusted allies, institutions, or authority figures are secretly working against the protagonist. Paranoia is justified because betrayal is real and pervasive.
Violence Gets Results
highInvestigation and séances (supernatural and rational approaches) fail to stop the killers. The plot resolves exclusively through lethal force: Camille stabs Bethany in the neck with a broken light bulb and decapitates Trevor with a falling bookshelf. The climax is a violent confrontation, victory is achieved by physically eliminating the antagonists, and the narrative presents no moral reservation about the killings.
About this trope: The central conflict is ultimately resolved through physical force rather than negotiation, diplomacy, or systemic change. Talking fails; fighting works.
Cultural messages
The System Is Rigged
highThe school's headmistress, Mrs. Landry, is the ostensible protective authority yet repeatedly misreads murders as runaways or accidents, allowing the killing to continue. Trevor (school staff) ran a years-long cover-up of Alicia Kane's murder through the ghost legend. Camille is framed as a suspect and must act entirely outside official channels; the institutional response actively obstructs justice.
About this message: Institutions meant to protect people — governments, corporations, law enforcement, the justice system — are depicted as corrupt, incompetent, or actively harmful. Heroes must work outside official channels.

At Edelvine Academy for Girls, a clique led by popular student Alice pranks their classmate Kerrie by staging a fake haunting based on the school's urban legend — the Edelvine Ghost, the spirit of a student who supposedly killed herself. Shaken, Kerrie returns to her dorm room and glimpses a figure watching her before screaming; the girls rush in to find her dead, having fallen from her window. New student Camille Meadows arrives and is assigned Kerrie's old room. She notices eerie occurrences and quickly clashes with Alice's clique — Alice, Bethany, Yvonne, Rosalind, and Lenora — leading to a fight and group detention. During detention, Alice persuades Camille and fellow outsider Helina to join a late-night séance to contact Kerrie. Expecting a prank, the group is stunned when a spirit actually responds, warning them they will all be murdered. That same night, Lenora is killed by an unseen attacker. Mrs. Landry, the headmistress, assumes Lenora ran away, but Camille finds a blood-drawn cross in Lenora's room and identifies it as a symbol connected to Alicia Kane — the original Edelvine Ghost. Rosalind is next, killed in the shower in what is ruled an accident. Bethany then spots a masked figure in her room, which flees when she screams. A second séance is held to contact Rosalind; her spirit names Camille as her killer, turning the group against Camille. Yvonne is subsequently murdered by the masked figure. Alice receives a fake text luring her outside, where she discovers Lenora's body before being knocked unconscious by the masked figure; Camille is ambushed and knocked out as well. Both wake up restrained in the library, where Bethany and the handyman Trevor — secret lovers — reveal themselves as the killers. Bethany had murdered Kerrie to conceal the fact that she stole Kerrie's essay, which won Bethany a $250,000 scholarship. Trevor killed Alicia Kane (his former babysitter) years earlier and staged her suicide to create the Edelvine Ghost legend. Bethany also admits she faked the séance spirit communications. Their plan: frame Camille for the murders and kill Helina to eliminate loose ends. At this point Camille reveals she is not actually Camille Meadows — she assumed the identity to avenge her real friend Kerrie. The power cuts out; while Bethany leaves to restore it, Helina (guided to the library by Kerrie's ghost) frees Camille and Alice. Bethany returns and attacks; Camille kills her by stabbing her in the neck with a broken light bulb. Trevor reawakens but Camille decapitates him with a falling bookshelf. Camille retrieves photos of herself and Kerrie, says goodbye to Helina (whom she kisses) and to Kerrie's ghost, then walks off campus.
