In 2045, after climate-modification towers built to combat global warming inadvertently trigger a new ice age, the remnants of humanity survive in underground bunkers. Colony 7 is led by two soldiers: the measured Briggs and the harsh Mason. When a distress signal arrives from the neighboring Colony 5, Briggs sets out with Sam and Graydon, leaving Sam's partner Kai in charge of Colony 7 against Mason's wishes. At Colony 5 they find the facility drenched in blood. A survivor named Leland reveals that Colony 5 received a transmission from a group that successfully repaired a weather machine, causing the permafrost to thaw — they invited survivors to bring seeds and join them. However, a scouting party sent to find the source led a roving band of cannibals back to Colony 5, who slaughtered nearly everyone. Leland refuses to leave and seals himself in his room. Exploring deeper, Briggs, Sam, and Graydon witness the cannibals butchering and eating the dead. Graydon is killed as they flee. Briggs and Sam escape through a shaft and seal it with dynamite, but the cannibals dig out overnight and track their footprints. Briggs devises a plan to lure the horde onto a crumbling bridge and blow a gap in it with dynamite. When the fuse dies, Briggs sprints back, relights it, and sacrifices himself to destroy the bridge and halt the pursuit. Back at Colony 7, Kai clashes with Mason when he attempts to execute a colonist without disease screening. Mason knocks her unconscious when an exhausted Sam returns. Sam wakes to find Mason has seized control; Mason refuses to believe Sam's warning about the approaching cannibals and handcuffs him to a bed. Sam escapes, confirms via satellite imagery that a thawed zone exists, and pleads for evacuation — but the cannibals attack before Mason acts. Many colonists die, including Sam's friend Viktor. The survivors barricade themselves in a room; Mason bars the door against Sam and Kai until Briggs's daughter Nara overpowers him and lets them in. Sam opens a ventilation shaft as an escape route. The wounded Mason stays behind: when the cannibals break through, he shoots a propane tank, killing most of them in the explosion. The cannibals' leader survives and pursues Sam, but Sam kills him. Sam, Kai, Nara, and a small group of survivors then set out across the snow toward the thawed land, carrying their precious seeds.
